Assignment 1-2

In this day and age it is easy for anyone or anything to be considered a "cultural icon". I feel the true way to become iconic is to be recognized anywhere at any time. Our culture , sadly, relies on popularity status. In our society to become empowered, you must become popular and it can be that your popularity ,or notoriety as you will, creates your identity. That is not always a good thing because one's mistakes may be learning experiences for them but many times they are what is used to define that person and that is wrong in may instances.

I have chosen Rachel Ray as my cultural icon. She has worked her way from small "hometown" venues to worldwide star. She has created a persona and marketed herself into talk show, and foodnetwork programming. She has even sparked websites that promote ill feelings for her and her shows. This proves she has "star" power. I like Rachel Ray because she is herself and does not care that others may not like her or her mannerisms.
